Has Social Media Peaked?

You can't argue that social media is the Web's hottest trend, but is this trend really just a fad? The following data from compete.com shows us that every major social network lost unique visitors from January to February 2010. Here are the numbers:

Facebook: -4.32%
MySpace: -11.52%
Twitter: -9.63%
LinkedIn: -8.3%

Telling numbers? Maybe. But, even with the drop off, the overall number of participants on these networks is just too great for you, or your business, to ignore.

  1. I would assume that the numbers have to fall. In the beginning, there were people using multiple accounts in a lot of these social media sites. People would have several twitter, myspace, etc. accounts. Also, there were people that rushed out to these places, checked them out for a bit, and decided that they weren't for them. I think that as time continues, though, the people that remain (and that's a huge huge number...) will virtually live on these sites. There will be people that only use the facebook search engine, or only get their news from twitter. Scary? Little bit. But if your business isn't one of them, you're sunk.
